Today is my birthday! I always hated having a December birthday because of how close it is to Christmas and New Years. But now that I’m older (and I think wiser), I appreciate having an end of year birthday because it allows me to reflect on both getting a year older and seeing another year come to an end.

As I look back on 2015, it’s been an incredible journey. I took a 7-week road trip across the U.S. and gave over 30 talks. I have so much appreciation for everyone who also decided to join me on this journey to mindfulness – to find ways of having a happier and saner law practice. Often, mindfulness opens the doorway to many other changes.

As I look forward to 2016, I’m making some big changes. First, I will only practice law halftime(!!!) It felt scary but my husband (who is the other half of JC Law Group PC) and I decided it didn’t make sense to pay for full time malpractice insurance and other costs when I was practicing less anyway.

I’ll primarily do 90-minute debt consultations where I assess the client’s overall financial situation, and offer various solutions. No more motions, pleadings, petitions, hearings, or opposing counsel.

In addition, I’ll continue to offer my one-on-one coaching to lawyers. This has been a wonderful opportunity to facilitate finding answers to some difficult questions around careers, relationships, and well, life in general.

I’m also finding that I don’t enjoy working solo all the time. So, I’m finding interesting collaboration opportunities. (More on that soon. Stay tuned!)

And of course, THE BOOK will come out in 2016. The Anxious Lawyer project started TWO years ago! It’s been in gestation for faaar too long and I’m ready to birth this baby and push her out into the world.

I plan to keep up with my writing at Above the Law and other publications.

I love learning and teaching. I’ll be teaching the From Anxiety to Mindfulness: An 8-week Program at law firms and bar associations across the country. I’ll also offer other shorter programs including one-hour CLEs and speaking engagements.

Let’s face it, we can’t be peacemakers and healers if we’re broken ourselves.

I want to continue to help bring mindfulness to the legal community. I want to start a national dialogue about lawyer wellness. Because, let’s face it, we can’t be peacemakers and healers if we’re broken ourselves. I want to build a community of lawyers who share this vision.

Oh, and I’m committing to carving out more self-care time in 2016. More naps. More time for cuddling up with a good book. More time for watching sunsets. More time for loved ones.
